Absa Premium Banking Relaunch
2013
Client
Absa Bank
Project at a glance
Agency: FCB Africa
Campaign: “Get a better perspective”
Target audience: Affluent and professional clients seeking premium banking services
Focus: Repositioning, acquisition and customer migration
Channels: TV, radio, OOH, digital, activation, CRM and internal staff comms
The Brief
Reposition Premium Banking as a more modern, compelling offer that encouraged migration from Platinum and appealed to financially active clients. The campaign needed to drive customer migration and acquisition, clearly differentiate from legacy positioning, land as both aspirational and practical, increase uptake and new-to-bank consideration, build a distinctive campaign platform and support internal staff alignment.
The campaign needed to:
- Drive customer migration and acquisition
- Clearly differentiate from legacy positioning
- Land as both aspirational and practical
Concept Development
Big idea: Get a better perspective.
The campaign emphasised perspective-encouraging clients to view banking as more than transactions and as a way to achieve lifestyle and financial goals. At a time when South African banks were expanding premium offerings to attract high-net-worth clients, Absa’s campaign stood out by focusing on perspective rather than just wealth, appealing to aspirational values.
The differentiator: built on the insight that customers often stick with familiar financial choices without reassessing value, the campaign reframed Premium Banking around clarity and control—encouraging a more informed, forward-looking perspective.
Channel & Execution Strategy
Creative direction
The campaign leaned on aspirational imagery, panoramic views and elevated vantage points to reinforce the idea of perspective. Visuals and messaging highlighted clarity, vision and broader horizons.
The idea came to life through a fully integrated 360 campaign, from emotive storytelling to sharp OOH and functional digital tools.
- TV: Human storytelling that brought “perspective” to life
- Radio: Narrative-led scripts reinforcing reconsideration and choice
- OOH: Minimal headlines designed to interrupt and reframe thinking quickly
- Digital: Decision-support tools such as the home loan estimator
- Activation: A large-scale Barclays Towers installation built around Premium Banking cards
- CRM & Internal comms: Communication to drive understanding, uptake and staff alignment
Together, the channels balanced emotive storytelling, practical utility and strong visibility.
Craft & Content Decisions
- Shifted messaging from product features to customer value and perspective
- Developed a repeatable campaign line that flexed across formats
- Created manifesto-style narrative and concise OOH headlines
- Adapted tone for ATL, digital, CRM and internal audiences
